The Yoruba Summit Group (YSG) has backed the yearning of a northern body, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), seeking a referendum to determine Nigeria’s continued existence.

The ACF, through its Secretary-General, Murtala Aliyu, in a recent interview, said the North was not afraid of restructuring but preferred a referendum to determine Nigeria’s continued existence.

He also said that various parts of the country could go their different ways if the nation’s existence was no more desirable. YSG, in a communiqué signed by its spokesman, Mogaji Gboyega Adejumo, said it aligned with the position of the ACF and other bodies and groups calling for a referendum. The group said a safe internationally-conducted plebiscite should be carried out in all the six zones by all component parts of the country to determine whether they still wish to remain together or go their separate ways as it was done in both the Northern and Southern Cameroun on February 11, 1961.

Also speaking on the 2023 timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission , the group said it was illogical to be talking about an election now when Nigeria is faced with myriad of problems that require urgent solution.
