Worker’s Day was recently celebrated all over the world but one does not need a soothsayer to know that many workers in Nigeria are not happy.
In 2019, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari , signed into law a bill that increased the monthly minimum wage from N18,000 to N30,000. However, most states of the federation have yet to impliment the law. It is sad that two years after, workers are still lamenting over the refusal of state governmnets to pay the new wage. It now seems that the idea of an increase in the minimum wage was nothing but a sham.
With the economy falling short of standards and recession plaguing the country, the quality of life of Nigerians has drastically reduced. Needless to say, a large percentage of Nigerians are living below the poverty line. Despite this, pensions are not being paid regularly. Being a public sector worker in Nigeria is incredibly tough.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent recession in many parts of the world, countries in saner climes are doing all they can to improve the quality of life of their citizens. For example, to make the conditions of work easier, the President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, recently increased the federal minimum wage from $7 to $15 per hour.
