A Professor of Law at Babcock University, Ogun State, and novelist, Cheluchi Onyemelukwe, speaks to GODFREY GEORGE about her growing up, craft and feeling about her book, Son of the House, being shortlisted for the NLNG Prize for Literature 2021book, Son of the House, has been named among the top three books for the NLNG Nigeria Prize for Literature, 2021.
The truth is that nothing just happens. This story is generally inspired by what my mother said to me about something that happened within our family years ago. It was not just about the story; it was every other thing surrounding it – how our views on some of the occurrences differed, how it made me think a little bit more about what had transpired and how we are so much embedded in culture and how we are socialised and how that affects how we see different things.
I think I grew up around books and storytelling and I loved stories – I still do. So, I read a lot. My father would buy lots of books in his library, both fiction and non-fiction, but I gravitated towards fiction. My cousins and other people I went to school with would say now that it doesn’t surprise them that I write, because I wrote a lot of small stories. From about the age of six or seven, I started trying my hands out at writing.
