The colour or the appearance of the urine we pass out often tells a lot about how it is with us inside. Many people you ask what their urine looks like will either tell you that they did not look at it or that they are not sure. Some will let you know what the colour is and it may range from white, when they actually mean it is colourless like water, or black like Coca-Cola. There are many small variations in between and each particular shade tells a unique story.

When the urine is truly orange, it can be a sign of acute malaria or of severe dehydration. Such dehydration is seen in association with some conditions like diarrhoea and vomiting or sometimes, as a sign of liver disease where jaundice is an associated feature. The kind of orange yellow displayed in the urine is mostly unchanged until the disease condition has been identified and treatment is started. This is different from yellow urine which can become pale as we drink more and more water.

As a footnote, it is important to note that urine can even be green in colour. This happens in situations where the person already knows that they are gravely ill. This can be seen in some cases of gall bladder cancer and in pancreatic cancer in which the hepato-renal syndrome develops. In this situation, there is advanced liver disease as a result of local spread of the cancer but no identifiable cause of kidney dysfunction or structural damage.

Answer: Well, there are different schools of thought as regards the use of this medication. The basic consensus is that it works for that purpose for the prevention of pre-eclampsia and some countries where this problem is common now include Vasoprim with the ante-natal medicines as your doctor has done. On the balance, it is safe to stop its use at 36 weeks to reduce the risk of excessive bleeding during delivery and also keeping the baby safe from an excessive tendency to bleed early in life.

Question 4: Dear doctor, thanks for your advice always on this platform. I have a son who is eight years old now and he has been complaining of pain in the tummy near his navel for almost three weeks now. A few times, he has even vomited and refused to eat. This is surprising for somebody that loves food like he does. The doctors we saw at the general hospital said it is an infection and gave him some drugs. There was relief for some time but the pain came back after some days and we went back.
