The Ministry of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has said many custodial centres in Nigeria have been decongested through rehabilitation of inmates, as well facilities across the country.
Aregbesola, said this on Thursday at a conference organised by the Order of the Knights of Saint Mulumba, Lagos Metropolitan Council, on Victoria Island. Aregbesola, whose speech with the theme, ‘Decongestion of Correctional Centres/Status Quo,’ was read by his representative, Alhaji Suleman Garba, said, “The Nigeria Correctional Service has embarked on the rehabilitation of facilities across the country. President Muhammadu Buhari, was gracious enough to approve the construction of 3,000 capacity custodial centres in six geopolitical zones. This will go a long way in decongesting the correctional centres.
“The Ministry of Interior has an oversight function over NCS, while the NCS has the responsibility to keep inmates in humane conditions as much as possible and it follows up with processes of rehabilitation and preparation for life after incarceration.”“A total of 3,000 inmates are currently undergoing different degree programmes with the National Open University, while 50 are undergoing National Certificates in Education at Yewa College of Education, Ogun State.
The Comptroller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, represented by the Assistant Comptroller General, Daniel Odharo, said, “Our mandate as a service is to provide safe custody, reform and rehabilitate inmates remanded or convicted by a court of jurisdiction. Unfortunately, overcrowding has continued to make a mockery of this effort. This problem, no doubt, requires a multi-dimensional approach from the national to sub-national governments.
