The controversial National Water Resources Bill may not be revisited by the House of Representatives soon, despite being re-gazetted for reconsideration,Our correspondent learnt that the bill might ha

ve been abandoned, due to the controversy it was generating among members of the House and the public.

The source said, “The bill has been gazetted. It is a normal process to gazette bills for consideration, which was why the bill was returned for gazetting. But the bill is on hold; it is so because of the noise and the controversy it was generating. I don’t see it coming up anytime soon.” A clash had begun when a first-time member from Benue State, Mr Bem Mzondu, raised a point of order to allege that his legislative privilege was breached as the bill did not follow due process, while a copy was not made available to him.

Based on the issues raised by the lawmakers, who were incidentally members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, had ordered a reversal of the process, asking that the Chairman, Committee on Rules and Business, Mr Abubakar Fulata, gazette the bill.
