Telecommunication companies are seeking a complete removal of right of way charges in states across the country to pave the way for telecoms infrastructure development.

The network providers, under the aegis of Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria, said that state governments should impose the laying of fibre cables on network service providers as part of the agreement to waive the right of way charges.

“Most part of the country is covered in 3G and we don’t have 4G in all parts of the country; so, we still have a lot to do in that regard. You can’t deliver high-speed connectivity without adequate transmission capacity, which is mostly delivered via fibre. The more fibre infrastructure we have the better coverage we will have.”

Fayemi said the decision would allow telecom operators to lay broadband or any other telecommunications infrastructure and ensure full broadband penetration in the state by 2021. Pantami had discussed the many benefits that an increase in broadband access could have on the economy of the various states.
