A new study has shown that well-fitted homemade masks with multiple layers of quilting fabric, and off-the-shelf cone style masks, proved to be the most effective in reducing droplet dispersal while loosely folded face masks and bandana-style coverings provide minimal stopping-capability for the smallest aerosolised respiratory droplets.was carried out by researchers at Florida Atlantic University.

The study contains images that show a manikin modelling mounted at a height of ∼5 ft and 8 inches to emulate respiratory jets expelled by an average human male. The researchers led by Siddhartha Verma found that droplets from a simulated uncovered cough were able to travel more than 8 feet; they travel 3 feet with a bandana, with a folded cotton handkerchief, they travelled 1 foot, 3 inches; and with the cone-style mask, droplets travelled about 8 inches. With the stitched-quilting fabric mask, they travelled 2.5 inches.
