The Senate has made a case for mandatory health insurance scheme for all Nigerians.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, made the call during a one-day public hearing to get stakeholders’ inputs into two health insurance-related bills, in Abuja, on Monday.

The second is, “A bill for an Act to provide for the Enhancement and Regulation of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, Protect Persons with Mental Health Needs.” “This group of people cannot afford insurance premium, yet we cannot allow them to suffer for health care services.”According to Oloriegbe, the bill makes provision for the establishment of the National Health Insurance Commission, its governing council and its functions.

Oloriegbe attributed most of the reported cases of suicides to substance abuse, mental balance and non-availability of services to control substance abuse.
