Unexplained infertility occurs when no cause is found for your inability to conceive. If you have unexplained infertility, no apparent problems will be found. But you are not alone. About 1 in 10 infertile couples suffer from unexplained infertility.
An infertility diagnosis generally occurs after you have been trying to conceive for over one year with no success. If you are 35 or older, infertility is diagnosed after you’ve been trying unsuccessfully for six months. For anyone who has been through the agonising process and grief associated with not being able to conceive, you can appreciate that waiting becomes the bane of your existence. You wait until ovulation is approaching, you wait until you can do an accurate pregnancy test, you see the dreaded single line on the test and the waiting starts all over again.
One thing that you likely don’t want to hear from your doctor is that the first step is to “keep trying on your own” for another six months. However, in some cases, it may actually be a good plan, particularly if testing has confirmed your diagnosis as unexplained. The point is that it’s not a good idea to keep trying on your own before you have both been tested. This is because some causes of infertility worsen with time.
If your doctor suggests Clomid alone, discuss whether it would be better to continue trying on your own for awhile longer, or discuss whether they would consider moving straight to IUI with Clomid.
