The House of Representatives Committee on the Environment and Habitat has approved a bill prohibiting the use, manufacture and importation of all plastic bags used for commercial and household packaging.
The lawmakers on Tuesday passed the bill, Plastic Bags Bill, 2018, with the hope that it will address the issue of relieving pressure on landfills and protect the environment. The bill enacted by the National Assembly, states that a retailer shall offer a paper bag to the customer at a point of sale; and failure to do so, such retailer is guilty of an offence. It also added that a manufacturer of plastic bags, for the purpose of selling, whether as a carryout bag is guilty of an offence.
According to the bill, any person found guilty shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding N500, 000, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years, or to both such fine and imprisonment.
This is a good development. What environmentalists have been craving for.
Misplaced priority. Clearly, our Reps still do not understand the application of simple scale of preference. They still think is just the idea of buying foodstuff instead of shoes. Madness everywhere
These guys are clowns. Truly plastic bags constitute a nuisance, but why won't there be so much plastic bags When we rely on 'pure water' for everyday drinking!. Dead on arrival
not forgetting that must of this platice bags 're made from waste recycled materials .
when they banned the used of this small business money making venture , where do they intend to put those that will be affected?
I know say one day these people go ban us make we no waka again, awon oloshi, awon on I wuruwuru..
The things they take seriously. Illiterates.
Sorry ooo, will condoms also be made of paper? Just asking but you know curiosity kills the pussy-cat 🤔
In spite of China population, plastic bags are not visible on their roads, drainage, etc as complained here cos Nigeria cannot utilise 40% of plastic bags utilised in China. I think legislation should be constructive.
Why the ban? Have they exhausted all recycling technologies? Are there laws compelling citizens to dispose plastic bags? Are there provisions for plastic, metals & others as done in other highly populated countries? Plastic waste management unit is big enough to employ many
I think the majority are reasonable now, we can not destroy the earth with ignorance while we have children
A step in the right direction greeneconomy
Please can somebody tell me their reasons for 'BANNING' the use of plastic bags, I'm lost here!
Useless lawmakers
What will now be the fate of sachet water which is the only goods affordable by the poor
So Una ban garbage bags too? Even abroad never do that. Copy copy, copy signature join
Herdsmen killing people up & down, Una no ban beef. Na, Una ban cellophane wen Una neva start the paper bag production. 0 sense of order. D young boi wen de my street hussle just get d machine, Wetin go happen to am now? Una no get sense say Una suppose give least 1yr warning?
That's what they are good at. When it comes to serious socio-economic cum politically sensitive matters they dilly dally.
Where were this same green chamber all this while? Busy padding budget and human resources. Banning plastic bags must have articulated policies that must both be economic viable and value added chain advantageous.
Nonsense talk 😂
Is plastic bags is the most important issue to Nigerians
From the fine imposed on this, one would know that this bill is just a joke😪... I mean a common man who is thinking of how to lift things easily goes to buy a plastic bag of 50 or 70 naira and you'll tell him he'd pay a fine of 500,000 naira😠😠?
I used to get frustrated by the actions and utterances of this ppl, but now I've changed by realising a simple truth that, they're more of commedians than a lawmakers.
So what will they use to pack their stolen loot if they ban plastic bags
Now, do we have companies making paper bags, brown paper. This is a good thing but do we have to buy bags that are super expensive?
Great news
OK good, what are they replacing it with?
Coco-yam and plantain leaves are biodegradable. The National Assembly can use those to replace the now abominable plastics. This is Nigeria. So anything goes!
I don’t blame the reps for not focusing on the right things, there are pressing needs than this. We got what we asked for. We shouldn’t expect anything better from our leaders they don’t have what it takes to lead.
Plastic senators every where
Nigeria is improving 😂😂😂😂😂
Imagine the type of bills our Godforsaken parliamentarians are passing. Laughable.
Mad
You can also do the same to the consumption of cow meat.
this is a good step but not a good time. before you ban something you have to first make out a replacement and then stop importation and manufacturing of the product. Then when adoption of the replacement has taken place then you BAN federal govt do not cause chaos with this.
wow!!!
idiotic government
Yet they could not ban foreign medical trips for themselves... Light not dey Na nylon matter be una problem. Recycling plants will function well if there’s constant power supply..
OlumideIDOWU The fine on Plastics is not enough, there should be TOTAL BAN. The rich manufacturing class and other big generators of plastic waste through packagings will be able to pay and pollute. lillyspickup NamugerwaLeah PlasticPollutes
Pls what you mean by plastic bags?
