Report writing: Lessons from the Lagos EndSARS panel submissions - Punch Newspapers

has generated a lot of controversy. Theissue is a very emotional – and even political – one. So, one should be careful in discussing it outside the socio-political environment. You, know, ours strictly an English class.

Our concern has to do with what it takes to right a good report, in a professional and impactful way. It can be the report of a research and other studies, a committee’s report on a project, company’s AGM or that of an investigative panel like theA report is written for a specific audience. In this wise, the Lagos panel’s is more for the state and Federal Government which are expected to act on it. A report should be factual, not bias. Also, it does not accommodate opinions.

The tone should be formal, while it should be systematically presented. Although guidelines and terms may vary, the structure of the report entails introduction, body, summary and conclusion. It should, of course, accommodate background information, the research experience, findings and recommendations. Very importantly, too, the report should be presented in simple and correct language; it should be well proofread before presentation.

It is good that the Lagos State Government has uploaded the judicial panel’s document online. This gives all and sundry the opportunity to read and digest it for different reasons. What you thus need to consider if you create time to go through it are how the panel features the elements identified above.
