A human rights lawyer and former president of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, Ledum Mitee, tellsFor some time now, the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People has been enmeshed in leadership crisis. What is the way forward for the body?
If MOSOP falters, it is important that we try and rediscover it because like the late Prof. Claude Ake once said, MOSOP has grown to become the conscience of all of us. And if it falters, we’ll die. So, I think the importance of MOSOP and its survival is more than just for the Ogoni people, but for several other people who look up to MOSOP and its ideals.
Yes, resumption of oil exploration, but on what terms? When people sit down and say don’t worry, let’s resume oil exploitation in Ogoni because it would bring about economic activity, it will bring about employment. I cannot see whether that makes any sense. That, in my view, is either based on ignorance or sheer deceit. Where have you seen in this world that oil exploitation brings about employment? Should I not go? And that is the sort of thing that is not good enough.
