In the last 10 years or so, fruits have become a major item of food, medicine, spice and many cultural uses among Nigerians. The wide acceptability of fruits has also brought many exotic fruits like the real apple , Syzygium jambos which is also called Rose Apple with bell-shaped fruits; water melon and cucumber in the family cucurbitaceae are examples of exotic fruit species that are now being cultivated.

I want to share some stories which have motivated me to look at the public health aspect of the health benefits of fruits. My father told me the story of one of the artisans working for him who was absent from his post for two months without any notice to his customers. When he finally resumed, he told my father that he took ill after eating some spice/fruit known as ajemumi .

It is also important to know that proper mastication in the mouth is the beginning of the digestive process; hundreds of larvae are eaten by villagers but they hardly escape crushing in the mouth! The story of the contaminated plantain explicates the complications that traders at the points of sale introduce into fruit quality during induction of ripening.
