Chris in a suit filed at the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, is asking the court to compel the Nigerian Government to pay N500million as damages

A lawyer, Okparaolu Chioma Chris, has sued the Nigerian Government over the black soot epidemic in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, and its devastating effects on the health and wellbeing of residents of the state. The suit also wants a court to mandate the government to take “bold and reasonable steps to stop or minimise to the barest minimum the emission of black soot in Rivers State and to begin the process of cleaning the air space and environment of the state”.

“A declaration that the act of the respondents in neglecting several pleas and petitions form the government of Rivers State and her citizens, alike to urgently intervene, stop and remedy the hazardous atmospheric condition of Port Harcourt and other neighbouring areas and local governments of Rivers State affected by the dangerous airborne particulate commonly known as black soot amounts to a gross violation of the applicant’s right and indeed that of other indigenes of Rivers State, Nigerians...

“An order of this honourable court directing the respondent to immediately take bold and reasonable steps to stop or minimise to the barest minimum the emission of black soot in Rivers State and to begin the process of cleaning the air space and environment of Rivers State. And for such order to orders that this honourable court may deem fit to make in the circumstances of this case.”

“Black soot then was visible on white clothes spread outside and on the body of cars parked outside and it even increasingly began to affect the paint especially white colour used in the painting of houses in Port Harcourt.

I thought Woke is already tackling this issue of illegal refinery within the state?

Always talk of ur freedom and stop talking of money..

I was thinking comments here would be constructive but unfortunately none this far. No one chides the government and no one states how best the people should be compensated.Unfortunately they are heavily criticized

Port Harcourt resident should drag Wike and Rivers people to court. Illegal refining is being perpetuated by Rivers people and the federal government.

Its about time!

People oyigbo axis of the state have been victims for so long.

Timing should've been long before now. 500m is too small an amount for damages. Start from 1tr.

Dis hungry 😅 people's rather fighting there freedom 🤣 Dey keep playing romantic comedy show with foolanis terrorists sponsors Gov't Nigeria, paying terrorists 100b ,mad dogs everywhere you go

You can't use white hanky in that area

What is 500m naira? For all your trouble?

And yet one part of the country that know nothing about the plight of the people are the ones benefitting more from this disaster. But if this oil were to be in the North Nigeria would've been over by now.

I wonder what inside of these poor folks look like.... Pls vote for a president with a heart in 2023.

This is just for an individual

Next time know what is 500m you should be talking about 500 billion or 1 Trillion

N500m is a joke

500Million is actually too small.

They want use pollution kill people

N500,000,000 for each family or for all of us? What type of damages demand is this? They better make some corrections there

Soot is dangerous and can cause cancer, so you all need to wake up and tackle this.

I really don’t understand why they’re choosing money over their health makes no sense!!! So after collecting the money the sooting continues or what?

that’s too low… the damage being caused to health is worse… more people need to file suits,

Very good .

Please, what would N500million do to solving such a health challenge to an entire community? Is this money for just few individuals to claim and loot without solving the problem of the community? I find it difficult to understand this!

How will they share the money?

Poor rat 🐀

Get a solution for this Black Soot Epidemic not demanding for 500M Damage.

That is what you will keep suffering for accepting to be oil pipe line security.

Good move, the govt needs to be dragged as nobody is above the law

I laugh in IPOB Nigeria is an abominable British Zoo

Federal government should help us in ph it's too much

Just 500m? That's bearly $1m USD.

Congratulations to my Eleme Commanders for Consuming this soot for longer than I thought and standing up for their Justice and not being cowards
