One person was shot dead and many injured in Lagos on Wednesday as commercial drivers and policemen attached to the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences Unit clashed in the Mi

le 12 area.

Lawal explained that when the police were unable to arrest the drivers as they began pelting the personnel with missiles, the police started firing live bullets and tear gas canisters at the crowd.Lawal said, “The police fought with the drivers this morning. They wanted to arrest the drivers but the drivers prevented the police personnel. But as the police insisted on arresting them, the drivers began to hurl stones at them.

“They chased the task force officers and in reprisal, the officers chased the drivers back to the Mandela Garage and they started vandalising buses and shooting indiscriminately. It was in the process that one of the conductors, Tunde Oja, was hit by a stray bullet.” However, the Chairman of the task force, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, said the enforcement operations around Mile 12 were carried out to rid the area of cultists and miscreants disturbing innocent members of the public.

He said, “During the attack, an officer of the agency, Sergeant Damilola Adeojo, was seriously injured with cutlasses and broken bottles, and he is presently receiving treatment and undergoing series of tests at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.”

Locational franchise and the Igbo question in Lagos - Vanguard News NigeriaOn February 23, 2019, some hoodlums in Lagos attempted to disrupt voting in the neighbourhoods of Lagos that are occupied predominantly by Igbos. By the way the definition of “Igbo” is any man or woman whose tribe is indigenous to the South East and South South regions of Nigeria, so that for the average Yoruba a man from Akwa Ibom is as much “Omo Ibo” as the woman from Enugu. Those involved or who sympathise with this policy of political exclusion argue, that Yorubas do not attempt to influence the outcome of electoral contest in the Igbo states; that Lagos being Yoruba territory, only people of Yoruba extraction should determine the direction of the votes and that allowing Igbos to participate in the determination of electoral contests will bolster the claim by certain Igbos that Lagos is a no man’s territory developed by many. Some Yorubas were so bold as to file out with placards that demanded that Igbos should move out of Lagos and go back to their homes of origin. vanguardngr Generalization is a convenient tool that myopic views are played out. That's the style of democracy in Lagos. Many Yorubas assume that if you are 'Igbo' you have no say in Lagos politics. Unfortunately it rubs off on other Yorubas. Igbo!! focus on the East. vanguardngr
