“This is for the welfare of my child.” Poliomyelitis Polio kickOutPolio Philippines

A health worker administers polio vaccine on a child during a government-run vaccination drive in Manila on October 14, 2019. – The campaign aims to boost immunisation coverage against the disease to all children five years and below, regardless of their immunisation status. The Philippines on September 2019 detected its first case of polio since 2001.

“This is for the welfare of my child,” Ruth Miranda told AFP after the vaccine was squirted into her child’s mouth at the Manila slum they call home. Polio, which can cause paralysis and can be fatal in rare cases, has no cure and can only be prevented with several doses of oral and injectable vaccines.

The Philippines was the first nation to use Dengvaxia in a mass programme in 2016, but a botched rollout led to claims that children had died after being vaccinated.
