A member of the House of Representatives, Mr Garba Muhammad, has said the recent suspension of payment of the new minimum wage by the Kano State Government justified his proposal to allow states deter

mine how much they could pay their workers.

The legislation is titled, ‘A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to, Among Others, Transfer the Subject Matter of Minimum Wage Prescription from the Exclusive Legislative List Set Out Under Part I of the Second Schedule to the Concurrent Legislative List, Set Out Under Part II of the Second Schedule to the Constitution; and for Related Matters.

The sponsor explained that the bill sought to make governments determine wages in accordance with available resources. The lawmaker noted that while some states were not able to pay the old N18, 000 minimum wage, it was recently raised to N30, 000, making it more difficult for the less viable states to meet their wage bill.
