The Chief Whip of the Senate, Sen. Orji Kalu, has urged Nigerian athletes and sports federations to ensure early preparations in order to win medal in international competitions.

Kalu, who made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, expressed worry that Nigeria’s football team failed to feature in the just concluded 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“I want the Federal Government to start early preparations because it is going to help the country excel,’’ Kalu said. Nigeria finished 74th on the medal table, 8th in Africa after more than a fortnight of intriguing sporting events.The silver won by Blessing Oborududu in wrestling and the bronze secured by Ese Brume in long jump took Nigeria’s Olympics medal tally to 27.
