Why tax increase on sugary drinks won’t help curb non-communicable diseases –Experts - Punch Newspapers

Experts have said that placing a 20 per cent tax on sugary drinks and sugar-sweetened beverages by the governments will not stop Nigerians from consuming them, nor will it reduce the incidence of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.

They rather called for better education of Nigerians on the health risk of high-calorie intake, arguing that price increase will not in any way prevent Nigerians from consuming sugary drinks. The group had also urged the National Assembly to formulate a tax policy on sugar-sweetened beverages and foods in the country.
