The House of Representatives’ Committee on Health Services on Wednesday asked the National Health Insurance Scheme to explain the circumstances surrounding the N3m that was not utilised in the N144m allocation to the scheme in the 2020 Appropriation Act.The committee queried the unspent fund at its budget defence session with the NHIS in Abuja.

The Executive Secretary, NHIS, Prof. Mohammed Sambo, in his response to the committee, said out of the N144m that was released for the 2020 budget, over N140m was utilised.Chairman of the committee, Tanko Sununu, and members had discovered that N3m was not utilised of the amount released to the NHIS in 2020.He pleaded with the committee to give him more time, saying he would provide the required details at the next sitting.

Meanwhile, the NHIS told the committee that Nigerians who were not on the payroll of the government or in the private sector could now benefit from the scheme through a new package called GiftShip.
