The Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Prof. Mansur Matazu, has said that the newly established meteorological institute in Katsina will boost the agency’s technical manpower support and serve as a centre to provide refresher training on impact of climate on different sectors of the economy.

A statement from the agency said it had received support from the Ministry of Aviation, adding that degrees in meteorology and climate change would be awarded at the institute in Katsina. Matazu disclosed that NIMET would apply to the World Meteorological Organisation for the centre to be upgraded to a Regional Training Centre whereby other English speaking African countries could come into Katsina or the Lagos training institute to train.

He said NIMET was strategising to implement the WMO-approved climate early warning system by looking at the forecasting in the whole value chain daily and more from generation to dissemination, while getting feedback from the users. This followed a Memorandum of Understanding signed with 11 universities including the University of Agriculture, Umudike; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Bayero University, Kano and the University of Ibadan, the statement read.
