Recent events indicate that how to deal with the problem of racism will continue to be part of our conversation across the world. The same applies to tribalism, which I regard as second-tier racism and it’s common in Nigeria. We won’t quickly do away with either because they’re in the heart, and what’s in the human heart is unfathomable, unpredictable, sometimes dark, shocking.

Now, the racist disposition of staff and players at the Yorkshire County Cricket Club can’t surprise non-whites who reside in the UK. They come across racism every day. I’m not surprised too. I’ve heard enough of the heartbeat of racists or tribe-hating characters to know it’s a joke to expect Yorkshire not to happen as cricketer Azeem Rafiq’s case shows. Why? Make rules, but a racist or tribe-hating fellow would be the last to be impacted.

In Yorkshire, Rafiq said he saw racism in his everyday encounter at the cricket club. It was institution-wide. Two other former players at the club have since come forward. The story of one of these players is particularly graphic, giving incontrovertible evidence regarding my assertion that racism is a disease in the heart. This cricketer said when he was 14 years old and had just been admitted to the club, he sat in the dressing room.

The malaise that is tribalism is so deep-rooted in the hearts of some Nigerians that if you state that other tribes too have something good about them, these Nigerians develop high blood pressure. They rage with expletives even. In fact, you add oil to fire when you say members of such tribes have done something good for you. I once stated things like this to someone, he said if members of a particular tribe heard they would insult me.
