Laporta — 58-year-old lawyer — was in charge of Barça from June 2003 to June 2010. In this time, he had Frank Rijkaard and Pep Guardiola as coach. During his tenure, Barça signed Samuel Eto’o and the dazzling Brazilian playmaker, Ronaldinho. Barça under Laporta’s guidance also won two UEFA Champions League trophies , four La Liga titles, three Spanish Super Cups, one Copa del Rey, one UEFA Super Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup title.
Bartomeu, who was Barça President from 2014 to 2020, was arrested on March 1, 2021, specifically in connection to a case now known as ‘Barçagate’ – in which Bartomeu’s presidency allegedly hired a third company to defame their rivals, both within and outside the club. One of those at the receiving end of the defamation happened to be Barça’s Argentine skipper, Lionel Messi.
