Kano state government has directed the reopening of private and public schools from October 11 after over six months of closure due to the outbreak of coronavir

The state Commissioner for Education Muhammad S. Kiru disclosed this in Kano at a press briefing on Thursday.Abuja Residents react to schools not reopening in the FCTThe commissioner however stated that students in JSS1 and SS1 in both private and public schools for boarding and day secondary schools are to wait for extra five weeks until the end of qualifying and transitional exams for SS2 and JSS 3 students respectively.

The classes have been staggered to give room for social distancing as required by health experts against COVID-19.According to the resumption schedule read by the commissioner, Primary 1 and 2 are to attend classes only on Mondays and Tuesdays while primary 3, 4 and 5 are to attend classes only on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays with effect from Monday 12th October.

Kiru said the first three weeks of resumption would be used for conducting second term examination and the third term 2019/2020 academic session commences immediately afterwards.“JSS1 and SS1 in both public and private schools, boarding and day are to wait at home for additional five weeks until the end of the transitional and qualifying examinations to ensure social distancing in classes and hostels.

He further directed all Islamiyya schools duly registered with Kano state Quranic and Islamiyya School Management Board to also reopen effect from Monday.He warned that for no reason should any school collect money from students and pupils for facemasks and hand sanitisers, saying the state government would take full responsibility of providing the items for the safety of staff and students from the ravaging pandemic.

Kiru added that efforts are ongoing to provide more classrooms for decongesting some of the overcrowded schools across the state. Read more: Daily Trust »
