A security consultant and publisher, Nigeria Security Digest, Chidi Omeje, examines the serial attacks on custodial centres and suggests that the National Security Adviser needs to prioritise action on prison security in this interview with ADELANI ADEPEGBAI think the frequent attacks on our prison facilities are a reflection of the general insecurity in the country.

Some security experts said the correctional service lacked the capacity to protect the custodial centres but the NCoS refuted the assertion, wondering if the attacks on police stations in the South-East also mean the police lacked the capacity to protect themselves. What is your take? It is shocking that in this age and time, we do not have CCTVs in our prisons. I think this is due to wrong prioritisation and deployment of resources. I think their major challenge now is the attack on the prison facilities. They should devise a means to solve that problem first because if they can’t protect the prisons, it is no longer a prison. Prison is defined by the fact that it is fortified enough to hold criminals in check, but if you cannot do that, it means you no longer have a prison.
