A coalition of civil society groups has urged the Supreme Court to take a critical look at the 2019 Imo State governorship election and reconsider its judgment which gave victory to Governor Hope Uzod

inma of the All Progressives Congress.

The coalition made up mainly of lawyers in the Movement for the Advancement of Democracy in Nigeria in collaboration with Cadrell Advocacy Centre, Youth Arise for Nigeria and Constitutional Rights Advocate Institute, said at a press conference in Lagos that the ideal situation would have been for the apex court to order the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a rerun election for the state.

Oshoma disclosed that INEC failed in the first instance for declaring Ihedioha winner of the election with only 14 LGAs spread, as against 18 LGAs that was constitutionally required, adding that the case of Uzodinma was worse-off as he only won in two LGAs.He said the coalition’s reaction was coming at this time because the Supreme Court had fixed the review of the matter for Tuesday.

“From available facts, whereas 25 percent of votes in 18 LGAs are the minimum requirements to emerge as governor in Imo State, and whereas Emeka Ihedioha only secured 25 percent in 14 LGAs and ought not to have been returned in the first place, shockingly, Senator Hope Uzodinma who secured 25 percent in only two LGAs of Oru East and Oru West was declared by the Supreme Court as a governor on the basis of simple majority.
