25 July 2021Adeola Akinmola, 22, the Chief Executive Officer of Corporate Ewa, tells NOAH BANJO about her businessWhenand how did you venture into the business you are doing?I ventured into this business in January, 2020. I had just quit my job as a private security operative in December 2019, moved to a new environment and was about to start a new life. I needed a means of survival; something that wouldn’t cost me much. The idea of ewa aganyin (mashed beans) came to my mind after a friend of mine made a tweet about craving ewa aganyin.

No president addressing terrorism, kidnapping, herdsmen, IPOB like Buhari—Presidency S'East Govs plead with Mbaka to stop criticizing Buhari Biafra: Nnamdi Kanu's trial will lead to IPOB's end - Presidency

Is beans the only food you sell?We specialise in ewa aganyin but over time, we have expanded into practically everything related to beans— bean pudding (moi moi), bean cake (akara), white bean pudding (ekuru). What motivated you to start your own business?

I started the business solely for survival. I was a ‘nobody’ that had no support system, and I wanted to become somebody. How much was your initial capital and how did you raise it?I started my business with N25,000. I saved the money while working as a private security operative. headtopics.com

What major challenges have you faced in the business? My major challenge has been in the aspect of delivery. My business is located in a part of Lagos with terrible roads, which means that there are limited dispatch companies willing to work with me. On the other hand, it seems dispatch riders are on a mission to ruin me and my business. The limited number of delivery companies willing to work with me, coupled with inconsistent and unreliable dispatch riders makes it tough. Sometimes, I have to board a bike and start delivering the food myself.

How do you source for customers? The Internet, especially Twitter, is my primary tool for sourcing for customers. How has the suspension of Twitter affected your business?Sales dropped a lot in the aftermath of the suspension of the social media platform in Nigeria. I guess a lot of people have abandoned Twitter since the ban. Not everyone has the time to connect to virtual private networks in order to access Twitter.

How have you been able to surmount that particular challenge?I don’t use Twitter alone. I manage the orders I get from other (social media) platforms and existing customers I had from Twitter. How do you advertise your business?I do sponsored advertisements on social media. In the past, I gave some influential people plates of ewa aganyin, so they could post it to their audience.
