Harassment of EndSARS protesters not justified, say activists - Punch Newspapers

“How many Boko Haram members and bandits have been arrested and successfully prosecuted? If what happened last year is allowed to happen again, the country can be destabilised.Another human rights activist, Onoriode Edafeyivwotu, stated, “The protest, which is to serve as a commemoration for all those who died last year during the #EndSARS protest, is a welcome development and a clarion call for our youths to wake up and demand what is right, fair and just from the government.

“The Lagos Police Command is obviously still relying on the Public Order Act Chapter 382 Laws of The Federation of Nigeria, which provides in Chapter 1 as follows: Edafeyivwotu stated that the provision of the Act relied upon by the police had long been overruled by the Court of Appeal in Inspector General of Police V. A.N.P.P & ORS. [2007] 8 N.W.L.R 457 at 498- 499, where the court succinctly stated that the Public Order Act relating to the issuance of police permits cannot be used as a camouflage to stifle the citizens’ fundamental rights in the course of maintaining law and order.
