‘Go and win the final’ — Dare hails Eaglets for picking 2023 AFCON ticket Author: Afolabi Gambari June 21, 2022 9:29 PM Sunday Dare, minister of youth and sports development, on Tuesday, congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 men’s team for qualifying for next year’s CAF U-17 Nations Cup in Algeria.by June 21, 2022 2 min read The Nigeria U-17 team have secured the twin target of qualifying for the final stage of the WAFU B U-17 championship as well as a qualification ticket to next year’s African U-17 championship billed for Algeria. Two goals by deadball expert, Emmanuel Michael, and a glancing header by Abubakar Idris Abdullahi condemned the U17 boys of Cote d’Ivoire to a 1-3 defeat in the first semi-final of the ongoing WAFU B U17 Championship in Cape Coast, Ghana.).

The Golden Eaglets beat the Young Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire 3-1 in the first semifinal of the WAFU B U-17 Tournament in Cape Coast, Ghana. “I salute your fighting spirit and determination. The Eaglets showed great tenacity in Tuesday’s semi-final tie at the 15,000 –capacity Cape Coast Stadium as the Coach Nduka Ugbade-led boys had a miserable start; falling to an early goal from the penalty spot. I commend your coaches, officials and the Nigeria Football Federation for laying the foundation for this success,” Dare said in a statement. Thirteen minutes later, Nigeria were ahead for the first time in the encounter when Michael, again from a free-kick at the edge of the box, blindsided goalkeeper Mohamed Cisse with an intelligent attempt that swept past the static wall. “I urge you to finish this assignment the same way your seniors, the Flying Eagles, did in Niamey, Niger Republic last month. The Eaglets, however, showed great composure as Michael pulled the team level with his second free-kick of the tourney and added another one in the 42nd minute to give Nigeria a 2-1 lead at halftime. Go and win the final and I know you can do it. “When we lost the Presidential election in 2015 in bewildering circumstances, to say the least, it was my belief that the party would use the opposition period to re-strategise to take back power at the earliest opportunity.

You are great Nigerian ambassadors already and we will be waiting to receive you with the trophy after the final. Though the Ivorians tried to find their way back into the game, the Eaglets were solid and they were further constrained by a second yellow card to one of their players on the hour. Another free-kick by Emmanuel Michael in the 77th minute missed the target narrowly, and Precious Tonye Williams came very close with four minutes left after a brilliant team move set him up with a clear chance.” Advertisement The Uduka Ugbade-inspired Nigerian cadets overcame the first-minute deficit from the penalty spot to overpower the Ivorians who are defending champions with three brilliant goals — two of them from expertly taken free kicks by the outstanding Emmanuel Michael. Apart from securing Nigeria’s place in the WAFU B U-17 final, the Eaglets’ victory also confirmed Nigeria’s berth in Algeria’s 2023 CAF U-17 Nations Cup. Aside from qualifying for the final and by extension the tournament in Algeria, the Eaglets will be happy to have gotten their pound of flesh off the Ivorians, who defeated them in the final of the same competition in Lome early last year. The final of the WAFU B U-17 event will be played in Cape Coast, Ghana on Friday. Defender and deadball prodigy Emmanuel Michael was presented with the Man-of-the-Match award, for the third consecutive match. Advertisement . Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets are the most successful team in the world in the U-17 category with five titles but they have two CAF titles-2001 and 2007. “I salute and commend the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Nyesom Wike for his efforts and gallantry at the primaries.
