The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said the current rental model in which people pay yearly rent in advance to property owners has become inadequate to address contemporary realities in the housing sector, especially in cities where demand for property is high and expensive.
Sanwo-Olu made the recommendation at the just-concluded 10th meeting of the National Council on Lands, Housing and Urban Development held in Lagos recently. The governor said Lagos was already working out monthly rent modalities to accommodate residents not keen on the state’s home ownership scheme.
Honestly, this will inturn result to a meaningful life. The basis of the story is just to divide rent by 12 months and handover the monthly rent to your landlords which will inturn makes you have the bulk of your remaining rents for the 11 months in your custody to plan ahead.
This will adversely push rents up in this Buhari’s “change” era. Monthly rents work in sane and organized environments.
In developed countries, any rent default results in eviction. No explanations given.
Let lagos state government and fashola build housing estates were people can pay monthly house rents to them.
It’s the way to go! Only in Nigeria I’ve seen people pay rent yearly.

2/3 & other utility bills, one will be left with 15,000 thereabout. Wouldn't one eat as well feed one's family, pay school fees, cloth oneself as well the family? Transport fare alone is die, not alone of savings for future needs. Please & please, consider the masses, the poor
This is a no go area to me. Why monthly house rent? Let's pounder on it from this angle; minimum monthly wage/salary is 32,000 or thereabout & house rent for say one bedroom apartment goes for 10,000 monthly. One will be left with 22,000 thereabout, after paying NEPA bill 1/2
These people are mad, please restrict it to Lagos.
This is a way of sending people back to their villages. If you are not paid monthly salary how can you pay your house rent every month?

Sometimes I wonder why we can't be objective. You want people to agree to your position because you felt that what you said is right. I think the Governor made a suggestion on what he feels would solve the widening gap in housing accessibility.
Does the state government build any house for his resident or do expect the state government to make a law or declaration on properties that are not owned by the state , we talking of sole proprietorship business, this is illogical
This is a very good idea and will make the economy grow in no distance time. I would suggest they start with Lagos start and see the success of this plan before other states can adopt it.
I totally support this. It’s not about having the money to pay a year house rent at ago. It’s about if you decides to leave the house at anytime, and for any reason. What you have in Europe and America, is monthly house rent pay. Your house contract can be 6 months renewal
