16 October 2021THE Ogun State Government has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the timber contractors in Ijebuland to expose illegal fellers of trees in the Queen’s and Buffer Zones, Area J1, basically reserved for elephants inside forest reserves. The state Commissioner for Forestry, Tunji Akinosi, said this on Friday while addressing contractors at Oke-Mosan.
There was outrage recently when saw millers, explorers and timber contractors stormed Abeokuta in protests against the alleged release of a notorious logger, Adetutu Ajayi, by the state police command. The aggrieved saw millers plying their trades in Ijebuland expressed concern over illegal logging at the Omo Forest Reserves in Ogbere, Ijebu-East Local Government Area of Ogun State.
They accused state government and the police of culpability. But the commissioner on Friday issued a seven-day ultimatum asking them to name those aiding and abetting the illegal activities in the forests.Read AlsoFour arrested as Bauchi community, illegal tree fellers clash headtopics.com
He declared that failure to identify them within the stipulated period from Friday, October 15, would lead to the forfeiture of their agreements. He said, “We ensure that our monitoring is regular and announcements are made daily on radio and TV in all the state’s dialects, to keep people out of the areas allocated to elephants in the forest. But the orders were still defied with reckless impunity, and we will not take it lightly.
Meanwhile, two groups of the Ogun Waterside Timber Contractors Association, led by Ajayi Olusegun, were warned by the commissioner to stop sales and supply of their logs and timber to the markets within the state.Copyright PUNCH.All rights reserved.
