A Professor of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, Oladipo Aboderin, has recommended the use of vaccines to fight infections instead of antibiotics.

Aboderin, said this while at a lecture organised to commemorate this year’s World Antibiotics Awareness Week 2021 held in Osogbo, Osun State. According to him, Antimicrobial Resistance or Antibiotics Resistance is a phenomenon linked to the abuse of antibiotics, adding that the United Nations General Assembly in 2016, classified antibiotics resistance as a global health emergency.

He said, “Constant and prolonged use of antibiotics leads to resistance. If possible, use of antibiotics to fight infections should be avoided. In the alternative, vaccination against infections should be embraced.” The President, State Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria, Osun State Chapter, Dr. Tope Akinwumi, said misuse or overuse of drugs was prevalent in the rural areas because rural dwellers engaged more in self-medication.All rights reserved.
