protest anniversary took place last week amidst the Federal Government’s curious claim of huge relief and success in its response to the demands of the protesters almost in full. Some media reports even referred to the event as a “memorial”, as if it has been consigned to the dustbin of history already. What took place last week was in fact the anniversary of the awakening of the Nigerian youth from a slumber. It was their own “o to gee” moment.

Based on figures from Forbes, the combined wealth of six individuals – Aliko Dangote $12.1bn; Mike Adenuga, $7.7bn; Femi Otedola, $5.9bn; Abdul Samad Rabiu, $3.7bn; Orji Uzor Kalu, $3.2bn; and Folorunsho Alakija, $1.9bn – is more than the entire 2022 Nigerian National Budget of N13.588 trillion . In addition, the tax bribes for multinational companies in Nigeria run up to $3bn annually.
