The Country Director of Wildlife Conservation Society in Nigeria, Mr Andrew Dunn, has raised the alarm that the number of elephants in the country was dwindling at an alarming rate as less than 500 we

re left.

Dunn, who made this known in Calabar to mark the World Elephants Day, appealed that everyone should join in the efforts to prevent them from going extinct. According to him, Nigeria was the leading source of elephant tusks sale worldwide up till last year, adding that such was worrisome. He said the centre for all ivory trade internationally was Lagos, and the trade booms in Nigeria more.

He said, “There are less than 500 elephants remaining in Nigeria. We should not allow our elephants to go extinct. We need many more people to support elephant conservation by regularly visiting the Cross River National Park, Yankari Games Reserve and other parks in the country where some of these animals are.”
