The Edo State Government has intensified the demolition of shopping malls, hotels and other commercial buildings without appropriate approvals from the relevant regulatory authorities.

“The state government restates its commitment to ensuring the protection of life and property and promotion of orderly development of the environment for the benefit of the good people of the state,” the statement reads.xBut in a swift reaction, the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) disagreed with the government over the demolition of two property in Benin City over alleged contravention of town planning regulations.

In a statement issued, yesterday, by Chairman of APC, Col. David Imuse (rtd.), the party condemned the demolition of a property at 13 Aideyan Street in the Ihama axis and another housing over 60 stores, being built on 90, Akenzua Road.He said: “It is distressing that the Governor Godwin Obaseki government is celebrating the demolitions like a rampaging occupation force.”

Imuse said the property under construction were approved by the Edo State Department of Physical and Urban Planning, adding that the explanation that their owners did not get relevant approvals did not hold water.In spite of the APC’s discontent over the demolitions, the state government insisted that the enforcement of the demolition of illegal structures was in line with the Obaseki administration’s urban renewal agenda. headtopics.com
