The increasing cases of cholera in some states in Nigeria have again brought to the fore the many things wrong with the country especially in terms of tackling diseases that should have been conquered by the nation.

In 2019 and 2020, cholera ravaged many states to the extent that Eavesdropper thought it was the first time the disease would be recorded in the country, hence it could be said to have caught the country unawares. But that is not the situation; cholera is not strange in Nigeria. It is the same thing with malaria which four of the WHO Africa regions namely Algeria, Mauritius, Lesotho and Seychelles, have conquered.

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control has noted that the country had entered a cholera season as the number of deaths hit 529. The NCDC on June 27, 2021 published a cholera report revealing that 16 states reported 4,343 suspected cases and 325. Some of the identified affected states included Bayelsa, Benue, Kogi, Sokoto, Gombe, Delta, Cross River, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kano, Niger and the Federal Capital Territory.

It’s that bad! Corruption and other useless activities combine to deny people of what rightfully belongs to them. It’s a fact that the people too have to do what is proper to stay alive. There is nothing bad if they ensure personal hygiene and keep their environments clean. It’s vital to do that to stay safe especially given the kind of governments that the people are sadly ‘blessed’ with. There is nothing to lose if they cater to their health.
