A Professor of Public Health and Community Medicine at the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Olusegun Bamidele, has advocated that attention be paid to the informal sector which, he says, accounts for significant portion of employment and gross domestic product.
The don, who spoke on Tuesday while delivering the 57th inaugural lecture of EKSU titled, ‘Occupational health services: The dilemma of the unsung and neglected informal sector workers, ‘lamented that the categories of workers in the informal sector were neglected including in the area of healthcare delivery.
According to him, hundreds of millions of informal workers live in extreme poverty and often could not bear the financial and opportunity cost of receiving health services and losing a day’s work. The don harped on the need for periodic medical examinations to be made compulsory and accessible to all the informal sector workers through the National Health Insurance Scheme at well-equipped comprehensive health centres across the local government areas in the country.
