The Senate has said the reason it voted in favour of the direct primary clause in the 2010 Electoral Act (amendment) Bill 2021, was not to spite governors.

The direct primary method would enable all card-carrying members of political parties’ to participate directly in electing their preferred candidates for elections.

Some political analysts have alleged that the senators passed the clause in order to whittle down the powers of state governors. They argued that the governors were using the indirect primary method to determine delegates for ward, local government, state congresses as well as the national convention.

The delegates would in turn elect candidates that would fly the party’s flags at all levels of elections. But the Spokesperson for the Senate, Ajibola Basiru, who represents Osun Central, debunked the claims while responding to an inquiry by our correspondent. Basiru said, “Those people who are making such comments want to set us against our governors. As far as I am concerned, the governor of my state is my leader and I don’t have any issue with him.
