My father was a nurse while my mother was a petty trader.Yes, it was my father who wrote down my date of birth. Being an educated person, he documented the birth dates of all his children. When I grew up, I saw where he wrote it though he had already told me before then.I am the first child among my mother’s children. My father had three wives and my mother was the first wife.
I remember when my father called my husband and said, “Dele, you have married my first child and automatically you are my first child. Take care of my children.” Since then, my husband took it upon himself to care of my siblings and they also regarded him as their father. There was a time that about 10 of my relations lived with us in Lagos. My husband was kind to us.He is resting in the bosom of the Lord. He died on December 19, 2013. The day he died is still a shock to me.
I missed the calls as I searched for the phone in my bag. When I called him, he said “Grandpa couldn’t talk.” I was shocked and asked what happened to him since I just left home. We had to return home quickly. We took him to a hospital and the doctor tested him and said he was gone. My daughter, Kemi, asked the doctor where her father had gone to. The doctor in turn handed over the stethoscope to her to conduct the test on her father.
African mentality.
