Guardian Arts One of the masterpieces of literary giant Prof Chinua Achebe has been picked by a book club for review. Referred to by USA Today as “A vision of social change that strikes us with the force of prophecy”, Mbari Uno Book Club presents ‘Anthills of the Savannah’; a classic of one of Nigeria and Africa’s greatest ever novelist and storyteller. Mbari Uno (House of Collaboration)- a hub using design to build human capacity and make a social impact- created this platform as an avenue for knowledge exchange geared at catalyzing positive social change. The book for this series, Anthills of the Savannah’, is a resounding tale chronicling the activities of three friends through a regime of military dictatorship. The sacrifices made on the journey towards the democracy of the fictional state of Kangan is intimately fashioned after the ordeals of post-colonial African nationalism. Chinua Achebe cleverly weaves our history into a brilliant narrative that urges us to remember our past so that we would not repeat them. The Mbari Uno book club is an initiative created to promote a reading culture, aid the revival of Africa’s indigenous stories and to act as a source of inspiration for the teeming African community. In her first edition, a spirited discussion of Malcolm Gladwell’s international bestseller ‘Outliers’ was done in collaboration with Adebola Williams, Group CEO, RED. The series re-looked success in relation to the disadvantages and advantages of a business climate like Nigeria’s. Mbari Uno, the brainchild of Chuma Anagbado and Obinali Okoli, collaborates with communities to innovate solutions to social problems. It exists to promote the ‘Design practice’ by creating and publishing design content, curating an online design directory and setting up spaces where designers, design entrepreneurs, and design enthusiasts can share knowledge, showcase their work, network, and explore opportunities for growth across Sub-Sahara Africa. Mbari Uno Book Club review of Anthills of the Savannah will take place on Saturday. 25th January 2020 at 10C Ladoke Akintola, Ikeja G.R.A., Lagos. Time is 12 pm prompt. Admission is Free.
