It was in the pre-Internet era when democracy had a less steady foothold in Africa. Using the NSO, Buhari clamped down on public dissent by intimidating, harassing and jailing individuals who broke the interdiction on strikes. In 20 months as the head of state, about 500 politicians, officials and businessmen were reportedly jailed for alleged corruption.
However, President Buhari’s actions are perhaps betraying his words going by some of his utterances and decisions ever since he became president.
