RAPHAEL EDE writes on the deplorable state of the notorious Ninth – Ugwuonyeama – 82 Division federal road that has become a highway to death for motorists
Just on November 8, a family of five who were returning from Jos, Plateau State were reported to have died on the Ugwuonyeama road when a trailer lost control while dogging portholes and rammed into the family in their car while in one of the military checkpoint queues on the hilly road. The pastor in a redeemed church and a Manager in Enugu substation of Transmission Company of Nigeria, ThankGod Ifeanyi Onyia and family were going to church on that ill-fated day.
During a tour of the infrastructure on Tuesday, our correspondent observed that movement was majorly on one lane due to the cavernous gaps in several places. According to him “millions of people are crying because things are not better. Go to Amanis road, if you are going to Anambra pass towards Ugwuoba because the federal road is gone. Now the other road you can follow if you move at 1pm, you will reach Anambra at 9pm. What do expect that people who live there to be saying about the government? Passing through 82 Division and going to the Ninth Mile towards Nsukka – Opi road is a disaster.
Another truck driver, Musa, submitted, “Our vehicles develop fault easily on this road. I usually bring in foodstuffs to Enugu from Benue. You could manage other bad roads but this one is a bit difficult because of the hilly nature. It is a difficult thing taking this road, but there is no alternative. This is the only road we can use.”
A driver with Enugu State Transport Company , Obiagu Anieze, also lamented about the deplorable state of the road. “These days, brakes of trucks loaded with cattle and goods from the north often fail and the trucks ram into small vehicles.”
And that country have president oooooo
