A former regulator says the government's move could appear as 'nationalising' the electricity firm.

byThe Nigerian government on Wednesday tried to walk back its earlier announcement on the removal of the management of the privately-owned, after facing criticisms over a decision it lacks the powers to carry out.

“The presidential directives as conveyed also directed the Bureau of Public Enterprises to set up a new management team of the AEDC,” his media aide, Ofem Uket, had said in a statement. “The president has no such powers,” said Sam Amadi, a former chairman of the regulatory body, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission. “Even if the federal government has a 40 per cent minority share in the assets, those shares are held for it by the Bureau public Enterprises that it has a position on the board. So the best we can do is to use the board membership to push policies to change.

Other officials told PREMIUM TIMES that although the company has been making such deductions from staff’s salaries, it claims it is not financially strong to pay them to pension authorities.
