about his recent book The Fulfilled Teacher and how to tackle the challenges of the teaching profession in the countryI have been doing this for over 12 years now. I am a trainer and I have been all over Nigeria training secondary school students and their teachers as well.I would say it was a calling. This is because my educational background is far away from teaching. I studied Architecture at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
My passion dates back to 1991 when I finished secondary school and cleared my papers. I was called by one of my extramural class teachers to join the team of trainers to tutor other students. The awkward twist was when some of my classmates then who didn’t pass came back to the tutorial class and met me as their teacher. This means I taught them. Since then, I have always loved any opportunity to help students.
I have also written a lot of articles on education and got them published in different news media. So, for me, it is not just teaching but it is about addressing the challenges facing education in Nigeria. Most of my articles address one ill or the other regarding education in Nigeria. So, I started making a case of what should be and how our educational system needs to run in Nigeria. There is a challenge in the teaching profession right now.
Secondly, there should be some financial gain that is worthwhile. Many teachers are not near that at all for a number of reasons, ranging from poor remuneration to unpaid pension to retired teachers. They are not being given their dues in the world. This is why we find most of them not giving their best in their job. They often ask: ‘How much am I being paid anyway?’ They are not doing the job with everything they’ve got. This is the same case for many of the administrators.
I met with one of the top education directors of a state and told her I would love to train the teachers in the state, but I was shocked at her response. She said, “Our teachers don’t need motivation. There is nothing that you would do now that would motivate them or change them.” She had all the negatives to say about the teachers. I left that place almost crying; I was worried and sad that such a statement could be coming from the head of all teachers in that state.
You have said it, so what next? Jokers
