The President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, has set up seven special panels to decongest the court’s dockets.

A statement by the media officer of the court, Sa’adatu Kachalla, stated that Justice Dongban-Mensem disclosed the development at the court’s headquarters in Abuja at her maiden meeting with presiding justices of the 20 divisions of the court on Monday.

She stated that the meeting was chosen to promote a sense of togetherness by enabling the most experienced minds to be deployed on special de-congestion panels that would tackle the most congested divisions. It stated that over 100 motions would be disposed of during the exercise. The President of the Court of Appeal was said to have blamed the problem of court congestion on litigants who went into slumber without diligently prosecuting their cases.

The statement quoted Justice Dongban-Mensem as saying, “The Court of Appeal cannot be used as a tool in the hands of these litigants who go into deep slumber. “All notices of appeal filed without being followed with other processes to ensure quick prosecution and disposal of the appeal should be shown the way out.”All rights reserved.
