Kayode Kasum And Walter Tayleur: Making A Difference Through Film Directing
After months of development and writing, Showrunner Heidi Uys handed over the reins of Castle & Castle Season 2 to two talented Directors; Kayode Kasum and Walter Tayluer.
Their mandate was clear, give fans of the highly anticipated show a season that would be worth the three-year wait.
For hotshot Kayode Kasum, this was his first collaboration with Netflix & EbonyLife and he had nothing but praise for the Executive Producer & Production Team. He says the production team is very thorough, detailed, and looks to attain nothing short of perfection.
In line with elevating the script, Walter Tayluer’s directing process included a walk-through with key creatives that covered genre, mood, style.
He sought alignment on the tone and visual storytelling approach. It was also important to decide what the show needed audiences to feel and think about.
Tayluer’s prep included a detailed analysis of the script’s structure, the characters in the script, the series language, and the themes.
Speaking on how essential performances were to him, Tayleur says:
“I opted to let the actors give their rendition of the performance — that gave me something to mold and shape from a director’s point of view. Not every scene required a rehearsal. Too much rehearsing for me takes away a scene’s freshness and spontaneity. Preparation time for me was not just about making decisions, it’s was also about exploring possibilities.”
Kasum had a lot of praise for the performances of Castle & Castle’s ensemble cast
“Embarking on a journey with actors is one of the processes I enjoy giving my all to as a filmmaker. The actors are all very skilled professionals and the script made it easy to identify what each character yearned for in the Castle world.”
Kasum expects viewers to love the new season of Castle & Castle and says “Everyone in this series is represented. Doshima is finding her voice in the workspace, a lot of young people would relate to that.
Remi and Prof’s relationship dynamic is one for the history books. In my experience telling African stories, I have noticed that people love to see romance and Castle and Castle Season 2 packs of a lot of romance, suspense, and drama.”
It was very important for audiences to relate to the cast, especially because the show revolves around a somewhat conservative profession (Law). Tayluer tells us how he sought to achieve this:
“Asides from background research and the opinions of technical advisors, I utilized nuances – quirks, and idiosyncrasies and found little unique traits to add realism, humanity, and dimension to the characters they play. If one believes enough in the character, one can easily believe in what they do and/or represent.”
It doesn’t get more thorough than this and it is clear to see that with Kayode Kasum and Walter Tayluer piloting the Castle & Castle Season 2 plane, we are no doubt in the safest possible hands!
