The Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi, on Monday formally presented the acting Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

Recall that Baba was named acting IGP to replace Mohammed Adamu while the President was in London for routine medical checkup.

Dingyadi told State House correspondents that he was at the Presidential Villa to present the acting IGP to the President.

He said, “You know he was decorated in the absence of Mr President and we thought we should formally come to meet Mr President to tell him that he has formally taken over and to seek for his fatherly advice, as to the way forward.

“He has congratulated the new acting IGP and he has asked us to ensure that we do the best that we can to ensure that he justifies the confidence that he has reposed in him.

“What we are having at the moment is a very serious challenge. And I want to assure Nigerians that with the new setup that we have now on the ground, we will make sure that we improve the situation to the best of our ability so that Nigerians will see the changes.”

The minister said the government would ensure provision of adequate equipment and personnel as well as ensure proper training and welfare of the personnel.

He added that the government also plans to boost the morale of security personnel.

Baba, on his part,  said he promised the President at the meeting to do his best to change the negative narrative about security in the country.

He said the police under his watch would need improvement in terms of logistics, manpower and equipment.
