COVID-19 Lockdown: Ilorin residents besiege gas stations

Residents of Ilorin, Kwara, have stormed gas stations to refill their cylinders in preparation for the total lockdown ordered by the State Government.
The lockdown which would take effect from Friday by 6 p.m was designed to curtail the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent, who went round the city on Friday, reports that there are long queues at different gas stations in the city.
At the Super Moon gas station in Olunlade Area, long queue of customers was seen trying to refill their cylinders before the 6 p.m deadline.
One of the buyers on the queue, Mrs Latifat Jimoh, told NAN that she rushed to refill her cylinder before evening when there would be no vehicular movement.
“I decided to come on time. As you can see, people are desperate to fill their cylinders because we don’t know what will happen next.
“I have been on the queue for more than 30 minutes, I will exercise patience till when it will reach my turn because it is necessary to prepare for the worst,” she said.
Another customer, Mrs Funmilayo Alabi, said she wants to be fully prepared for the total lockdown.
“There is nothing we can do than to obey the rules and stay at home. I am ready to remain indoors, but I need to quickly refill my gas because we don’t know when the lockdown will end,” she said.
The gas attendant at Super Moon, Mr Tunde Abayomi, said he had never witnessed such high patronage in the station.
“Customers keep coming. It is strange. Even during festive period, it was never like this,” he said.
Similar situation was recorded at the Bovas Gas station, Offa Garage in Ilorin where massive influx of customers were seen struggling to refill their cylinders.
One of the customers, Mr Habeeb Olusegun, said he was shocked to see huge crowd on queue.
“Everybody is rushing to fill his or her cylinder. We are ready to stay indoors for safety purpose and to follow government order,” he said.
NAN also reports that Orange Gas station in Tanke area witnessed high patronage as customers were on queue for refill.
A customer, Mr Ezra Ekundayo, said he decided to refill the gas because he is ready for the lockdown.
“I will play my path by obeying government’s order. It baffles me when I see this huge crowd on queue as if we are all preparing for war.
“We pray this situation will not last long. This Coronavirus will force us into house arrest. I need gas to carry on,” he said.
NAN recalls that the Kwara Government on Thursday announced total lockdown of the state as part of efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 starting from 6 p.m on April 10, till further notice. (NAN)
