Russian cosmonauts encountered an unexpected odor and unidentified liquid drops from the Progress cargo spacecraft docked at the International Space Station, prompting a cautious response from the crew and ground control.
Operators of the International Space Station ( ISS ) were alerted to an unexpected odor coming from the Russian Progress cargo spacecraft that docked with the station last Saturday. The Progress spacecraft, launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, delivered about 2.5 tons of supplies for the seven-person crew. Upon opening the spacecraft’s hatch, cosmonauts Ivan Vagner and Aleksandr Gorbunov observed an odor alongside drops of an unidentified liquid.
The cosmonauts left the area and closed the Poisk hatch, while station air scrubbers and contaminant sensors monitored the atmosphere. By Sunday, flight controllers confirmed air quality was normal. NASA stated there were no concerns for the crew and that operations were proceeding as planned. On Monday, NASA reported that the odor had quickly disappeared, possibly due to outgassing from materials inside the cargo spacecraft. Cargo transfer from the Progress capsule to the main station is now on schedule. This marks another instance of a Russian spacecraft causing concern at the ISS; a more serious event involved a coolant leak on a Soyuz spacecraft in December 2022
